The Butchart Gardens Victoria - the beautiful Japanese Garden
The Japanese garden at the Butchart Gardens Victoria is a favourite of all our guests. Its paths meander through tranquil settings with colours and textures changing year-round.

The Japanese Gardens history
The Japanese Garden was the first garden to be created. On the slope north of Benvenuto down to Butchart Cove on Tod Inlet a somewhat North American version of a Japanese Garden was begun in 1906 near where Robert Butchart moored his yacht. The gardens entrance, as now, was under a red lacquered torii gate. Its design was a collaboration between Jennie Butchart and IsaburoKishid

The Butchart Gardens Japanese Garden today
A flowing stream and series of ponds have bridges and fountains with surrounding lanterns, many imported from Japan by the Butcharts. As well as native trees there are Japanese maples, beech trees and many other inported trees and shrubs. A particular delight is to walk through the illuminated gardens on summer evenings.

Ensure you stroll right down to the cove via the bridges and ornamental features and enjoy the stream passing through the shaded mossy west side.
As well as the Japanese Garden there is the the dramatic Sunken Garden which alone will occupy you for a long time so plan to stay for a few hours to visit all the gardens which jointly comprise the Butchart Gardens.
